Westerly Riviera 35
Inspired by the success- of the Konsort Duo,
Westerly conceived the Riviera 35 as a larger and bang
up-to-date pilothouse cruiser. Much of Westerly's marketing
focused on the panoramic view from the saloon — there's 1.4m2
(14sq ft) of smoked acrylic each side, which gives an almost
unsurpassed view out, without others being able to see in.
The Riviera uses the tried and tested hull of
the Seahawk and Falcon to give respectable cruising performance
under sail, with the addition of a sugar-scoop stern, a new deck
and a wider coachroof. Although the pilothouse is undeniably
bulky it is more rounded than many, with a softer, more modern
appearance.
Down below she offers cavernous
accommodation. The bright and spacious deck saloon uses the full
3.7m (12ft) beam and incorporates dinette. About the only
omission is a decent chart table.
The main sleeping cabin is a huge double in
the bow. This boasts plenty of stowage, a settee, room to walk
around and an en. suite heads with separate shower compartment.
The berth is also larger than average. The double aftercabin is
small by comparison only with en suite facility, which reduced
the cockpit locker to merely enormous.
Under sail, the Riviera has a rig of the same
sail area as the Falcon and Sea- hawk, so performance is rather
better than might be expected. However, being 1.1 tons heavier
and with considerable windage, she is slightly slower.
A 28hp Volvo Penta 2003 engine was standard,
with a 43hp turbo-charged version offered as an option. Both
were easily capable of driving the boat at hull speed.
The Riviera has inside and cockpit hydraulic
steering (which needs no switchover), a roller headsail, in-mast
furling and all lines are led aft.
The Riviera was a well-built vessel, although only produced for a relatively short time, from 1988 to 1990.
